The monastery of Chevetogne is situated in a hilly landscape at the edge of the Belgian Ardennes, midway between Brussels and Luxemburg.
It is an international Benedictine monastery which houses both a Byzantine and a Latin church.
Verkerke works on the monastery annually, during the winter months. Recently, an entire building was added in between the church and the monastery, which will serve as additional guest’s quarters and as a shop. All paintwork in this building was done by Verkerke in collaboration with Ster Schilders. A colour-plan was made, and everything was covered with glass fleece to prevent cracks and to guard against inadvertent damage. The whole was spray-painted in three harmonious shades, and the hardwood doors and window frames were stained and triple-varnished. A large amount of decorative work was also employed. For instance, the elevator and fireproof doors were painted in faux-wood, with imitated molding. Metal- and marble imitations were also used. The company of the monks and the working and eating together has been a very special experience for Verkerke.
